Canterbury Economic Development Strategy

The Christchurch Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) sets an ambitious vision and bold goals. It identifies a range of initiatives that will enable us to become a more globally competitive city and region.

Our vision:

Christchurch is a SMART City – the hub of the South Island economy

Christchurch is a nimble, connected city, driving exports, adding value, generating wealth and providing a superior quality of life to all.

By 2020 the Christchurch economy will have doubled its historic growth rate in response to a multitude of City lead initiatives and ongoing support.

  • We will have an international reputation as a Smart City; a great place to live, work, visit and do business. It will have established itself as a Learning Centre and a magnet for highly skilled workers and businesses.
  • Christchurch’s record for retaining and attracting jobs and investment will have been spectacular. Access to capital and the right skill mix mean that the growth of Christchurch businesses is unconstrained.
  • Ahead of its time infrastructure has provided a compelling platform for the development and growth of existing and new industry sectors.
  • The Canterbury Regional Innovation System makes the city recognised worldwide as a centre of innovation. Christchurch has an international reputation as a business friendly city and has invested in amenities and recreation facilities which are the envy of Australasia.

Goals

  • Doubling the historic growth rate of gross domestic product (GDP in 2020 is $25.1b rather than $19.5b, an additional $5.6b)
  • Doubling the value of exports from $3.5 billion to $7.0 billion
  • Increasing the average annual earnings for workers from $39,000 to $57,000 (increase by 46%)
  • Having the highest quality of life in NZ (as measured by the Big Cities Quality of Life Survey)
  • Managing economic development in a sustainable manner
