Medical Technologies
The medical technologies sector is an emerging and diverse sector in New Zealand with an estimated 100 entities made up of established multi-nationals, small to mid-sized companies, start-ups and research organisations.
Medical technology covers all devices and associated technologies related to the delivery of human health outcomes. The sector is focused in particular on technologies that require registration for use in human health applications, including assistive devices.
CDC has targeted medical technologies as a high growth sector because:
- Christchurch is the regional centre for healthcare delivery in the South Island and home to a strong base of medical-related companies, research institutions and start-ups;
- A recently completed government study demonstrated the impact medical technology has on the New Zealand and Christchurch economy as well as its potential for future growth;
- Christchurch has a strong health infrastructure that assists in providing market ready solutions. This infrastructure includes:
- Christchurch Hospital, the largest teaching hospital in the country
- The Otago School of Medicine, Christchurch Campus
- University of Canterbury engineering leadership in electronics, ICT-innovation and specialised manufacturing.
Christchurch city and the Canterbury region have a strong global reputation for clinical trials and internationally recognised ethics processes which make us an excellent test-bed for innovation in health delivery.
Our key areas of focus include companies in the following sub-sectors:
- Medical Equipment
- Medical Diagnostics
- Electronics and Instrumentation
- Health Information Technology
As well as developing a Medical Technologies cluster in Christchurch, CDC is developing a Health Innovation Hub in partnership with the Canterbury District Health Board, to accelerate the development of the industry by providing an innovation interface between clinicians, researchers, industry and government.
