CDC helps recruit quality students
Back in 2006, the University of Canterbury wanted to try and recruit international Chinese students with more ability than those that international agents were presenting.
Canterbury Development Corporation investigated the issue and facilitated a partnership between the University of Canterbury and the Number 1 Middle School (the best secondary school in Central China) attached to Central China Normal University in Wuhan.
Outcomes:
In 2008, UC awarded two full scholarships (full scholarship = full tuition fee waiver) and two partial scholarships ($5k tuition fee waiver for three years). In total, 11 students (of which seven are full fee-payers) are recruited.
The 2009 round to select scholarship students is currently underway.
Through this project, CDC and the university have learned that it is better to use a credible Chinese partner school to recruit international students to come to Christchurch. The credible partner in China also cares for their reputation and integrity and therefore the quality of the recruitment can be assured.
And again…
In another instance of CDC intervention in setting up, facilitating and bridging a partnership, the University of Canterbury Commerce department has now entered into a partnership with Zhongnan University of Economics & Law (ZUEL) in Wuhan to recruit quality ZUEL students into UC Commerce programmes. The Wuhan partner helps the University of Canterbury maintain the quality of the recruited students and the quality of teaching.
This annual recruitment project has led to teacher-training and research collaborations, as well as improving UC Commerce’s capabilities for more engagement with China counterparts.
