Canterbury Development Corporation Appoints New CEO
Event date: ,
It was announced today that Mr Tom Hooper will take up the role of CEO at the Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC) on 3 October. Tom replaces Mr Bill Luff who is now leading various major projects at Solid Energy.
The Canterbury Development Corporation plays a leading role in economic development activity in the Canterbury region on behalf of the Christchurch City Council. Just before the September earthquake, the Christchurch City Council had signed off on a new long term economic growth strategy for the city, the Christchurch Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). Mr Hooper’s top priority on taking up the reins will be to complete the reworking of CEDS post the quakes and to begin implementing some of its sub strategies. The extensive economic modelling and wide consultation which underpinned the overall strategy will be particularly useful in assisting the City Council to evaluate and prioritize options in its plans for the rebuild of the city. They have already been taken up by the Canterbury Business Leaders Group in evaluating investment options in the city. Equally they will enable CDC to assist CERA as it develops its plans for the city recovery effort. CDC and CERA have agreed to partner with each other in this effort.
Mr Hooper, a New Zealander and Canterbury resident, joins CDC after a year running his own private company advising a variety of businesses on strategy and commercialisation. Previously he was COO at Windflow Technology Ltd and prior to that ran various successful companies in the United Kingdom.
CDC Chairman, Dr Garth Carnaby said that “Tom is an outstanding New Zealander with the experience and skills now sought by the CDC Board as CDC contributes its ideas and expertise on numerous fronts at a time of challenge and excitement as the region moves from survival mode to recovery. Over the last seven months our highest priority has been assisting businesses to survive the disruption and loss caused by the quakes. Our joint venture with the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce, Recover Canterbury, has assisted hundreds of businesses with advice, grants and loans over this period.”
