Target market

Globally, Tait is focused on two key segments which rely on critical communications to achieve their core objectives: public safety organisations and utilities. Utility clients include, Pacific Gas and Electric, NorthEast Utilities in the USA, and Eskom in South Africa.

Tait has invested in continuing relationships with clients in the global public-safety sector including the Gongan (Chinese Police), Sao Paulo Civil and Military Police, and New Zealand Police.

Approximately 95% of Tait’s >$150M revenue comes from export sales. Of this, 45% of export demand is from the Americas, 15% from Europe, Middle East and Africa and 40% from Asia-Pacific.


Tait Limited was formed in 1969, in Christchurch by Sir Angus Tait. With a staff of 12 people, its core business was the design and assembly of mobile radios. Over the following decades, the company’s unswerving commitment to research and development enabled Tait to develop award winning radios, which saw the company grow its export business expanding its operations into the UK, Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

Tait built its reputation as a manufacturer of radio communications products. Since then the business has evolved and now offers managed and support services, delivering increased value to clients, internationally and domestically, on a long-term basis.

Today, Tait employs more than 700 staff around the world and has evolved from a radio manufacturer to a full service solutions provider responsible for the design, deployment and management of critical communications systems. Tait works with global partners, such as Cisco, to deliver unified critical communications solutions to clients in over 60 countries.

Tait was established with a charitable trust shareholder by its founder Sir Angus Tait as a way to ensure that the company would continue to build long-lasting benefits for clients, colleagues, the community and the country.

Tait is a founding partner of the NZ ICT Innovation Institute (NZi3) at the University of Canterbury, providing funding and oversight of the institute’s Wireless Research Centre. Tait supports a number of Canterbury school education initiatives including ICT Connect in Schools, Vex Robotics, and Science Alive.

The Tait Foundation is investing more than $35 million in the development of a new high-tech campus for Christchurch. The development includes the construction of a new headquarters for Tait due to be complete in 2014, which embraces the principles of innovation, collaboration and sustainability.

Tait invests 15% of its annual revenue into research and development shared across several investment streams responsible for research and development, regional reinvestment and education.
