ICT system engineer – cloud
Moved to Christchurch:
Why did you choose to move to Christchurch?
I got a job offer from Tait Communications (Tait), which is based in Christchurch.
What does your company do?
Tait designs, manufactures, deploys, supports and manages digital wireless communication systems for organisations that depend on communication to ensure the safety of people and critical services.
What does your job involve?
In my role, I work on computer system engineering and integration; specifically, cloud-computing environments.
What do you enjoy about your job?
Tait has a great company culture. I really enjoy the team I work with and the work that I do. There are a lot of companies working with new technologies today, but I believe the company culture and people’s attitudes make the difference. This is where Tait is different from others. The history behind the company always amazes me. It came from such humble beginnings – the founder, Sir Angus Tait, worked in a radio store after school, then joined the Air Force and worked on airborne radar. In 1969, he formed a company designing and assembling mobile radios. Tait began from there. It is an inspiring story for everyone.
How do you see your career progressing?
I am getting lot of exposure to cutting-edge technologies, which will add definite value to my CV.
Tell us about your lifestyle in Christchurch:
Fun at work:
The team is very friendly and helpful. On Fridays, we have a gathering at a pub and we have a lot of fun with the occasional communal lunch or dinner. We also play sports, like golf and rugby.
Fun outside of work:
Sightseeing is one of my main activities as I’m new here. Christchurch is a beautiful place and I’m enjoying it.
We enjoy frequent walks and visits to parks and places like the museum.
Life in Christchurch:
Christchurch locals are very friendly and always willing to help. There is less traffic here than in Sri Lanka. I love the climate and environment very much. I have lived in other parts of New Zealand before and there is a significant difference between them and Christchurch. If you love a nice climate, friendly locals and a quieter atmosphere, then Christchurch is number one.
