Why did you choose to move to Christchurch?

I had been working in China for three years. I thought it would be a great adventure if I could travel, study or work in a foreign country to improve my English and expand my life experience with people from different cultures.
The reason I chose Christchurch is that it is not a very big city, everything is convenient and life here is relaxing. It is pretty easy to meet people, which makes me feel like I’m in my hometown. We have close relationships here and connect with others frequently.

What does your company do?

Allied Telesis delivers Internet protocol (IP)/Ethernet network solutions to the global marketplace.

What does your job involve?

My job is to record, reproduce and resolve in-field customer issues with some assistance from more senior staff, as required. I need to ensure that the customer has a positive impression of Allied Telesis and its products.
I must also familiarise myself with ATLNZ work standards and practices, product development processes, relevant industry standards, networking and the business overall.

What do you enjoy about your job?

What I am doing is related to what I learnt at university and also my previous job. At the same time, almost all of my colleagues are very easy to get along with, which makes me relaxed to talk and communicate.
The flexible working hours are quite reasonable and we have good work conditions. Many of my colleagues are from different countries all over the world, which creates a very multicultural environment.

How do you see your career progressing?

Allied Telesis is a big company that provides not only my salary but also an excellent chance for me to develop myself.
I believe that with several more years’ experience and knowledge, I will become a senior engineer. I work with a lot of experienced engineers and there are many things I can learn from them.

Tell us about your lifestyle in Christchurch:

Fun at work:
We have a social club at work that organises movie-watching or sometimes a morning tea together to have fun.

Fun outside of work:
I love travelling so it is quite usual for me to go for a day trip or longer.

Family aspects:

All of my family is still in China. I really miss them, especially during holidays. I wish someday I can have my own house and bring them to New Zealand to live a better and more balanced life.

Life in Christchurch:

Christchurch is an amazing city full of discoveries. I really love Victoria Park and the quiet beaches here. It is great fun and relaxing to take a walk after dinner or on weekends.
