General Cable Oceania manufactures, imports, exports and sells a comprehensive range of energy and communications cables to Asia-Pacific countries and throughout the world.

Target market

Roughly 50% of cable manufactured by General Cable in Christchurch is exported to Asia-Pacific and around the world.
General Cable is the leading supplier in the Australasia domestic market and has earned a growing reputation for success in competitive export markets. Projects include:

  • thermal generation developments and industrial projects
  • large retail complexes
  • some of New Zealand’s most recognised buildings – Auckland’s Sky Tower, parliament buildings, and Te Papa, Museum of New Zealand
  • communications projects, including the development of a nationwide network of fibre optic cables and central city fibre networks
  • design and construct of ‘green’ energy cables, installed in Darling Walk Project – the first eco-friendly cable job for General Cable in New South Wales, Australia
  • transmitting energy for a satellite earth station in the Antarctic, runway lights in the Pacific Islands and oil refineries in Asia
  • exporting telecommunications cable into China and the South Pacific region, and energy, control and instrumentation cable into Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and the Pacific Islands
  • improving infrastructure by providing signaling cable to the rail industry for regional Australia
  • major supplier of automotive cables to Pacific-based harness manufacturers for the Australian and Japanese motor assembly industries


The company was originally established as Associated British Cables (ABCAL) for building wires and power cables. A brief look at the company history:

1950Construction commenced in Christchurch, New Zealand
1968Mains plant began production of power cables, including paper lead and PVC insulated cables
1991Gilbert Lodge, a distribution company, was purchased and service centres in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin established
1993Fiji operation, Dominion Wire & Cable, joined MM Group
1996Manufacturing centralised into one site in Riccarton, Christchurch, and celebrated 50 years of cable manufacturing
2000General Cable Group restructured and dropped the BICC name – changed to General Cable NZ Ltd
2001Brand-Rex Australian sales and distribution network purchased by General Cable and General Cable Australia formed
2005General Cable extended its business presence in the Asia-Pacific region
2007General Cable Corporation purchased Phelps Dodge International and General Cable Oceania

Company size

The company’s Christchurch operation is the Oceania headquarters and encompasses New Zealand, Australia and Fiji. It covers a seven hectare site and employs almost 300 staff.

Distribution and sales units are strategically located throughout New Zealand, Australia and Fiji, and employ another 50 employees.

Research and development

General Cable Oceania works closely with the General Cable global technology centres around the world, particularly in the areas of cable material development, submarine cables and fibre optic cable technology.

With an in-house laboratory for the formulation of PVC compounds, General Cable Oceania has introduced a number of specialty materials. It has also made several unique designs to meet specific cable needs for local initiatives – for example, he cable used in the America’s Cup yacht, portable power supplies units and fencing systems.
