The company’s target market is large, nationwide supermarkets and food service (catering) markets in New Zealand.


The Heller family tradition of butcheries began when Gorg Heller emigrated from Germany to New Zealand during the Otago gold rush and began supplying miners with small-goods from his shop in Arrowtown. He wisely decided that supplying food to gold miners was a better option than actually being one.
Todd Heller continued a long family line of butchers when he opened his first shop in New Brighton in 1985,and began offering a diversity of new flavours discovered on his travels around the world.  Todd introduced more exotic tastes and varieties to his range, and when he saw how well his customers took to them, he began supplying extensively throughout the South Island.

A merger with Tasty Bacon, forming Heller Tasty Limited, and the purchase of Vienna Sensational Foods saw the company gain invaluable national distribution. And in 2002, Hellers won its first award – the Supreme NZ Sausage award for their London Pride sausage.

Company size

Hellers employs over 400 staff, producing 500 tonnes of delicatessen meats per year, and their estimated annual turnover is approximately NZD$200million. This is set to increase by 25% should Hellers purchase Goodman Fielder’s meat production business, which would lead to production of their Kiwi Huttons brands in both Christchurch and Auckland.

The company also promotes ‘Sausages for Schools’, an initiative that encourages primary schools to bring their community together around the BBQ to raise funds for something they need. Hellers donates its award winning sausages to 25 schools every month and has just passed the milestone of supplying a million sausages for schools’ fund-raising efforts.
